Leiston Abbey: Digging and Drones with Dig Ventures

Really excited to share a film Baxter and I have been working on over the course of the past year with Dig Ventures and English Heritage.

Brendon at Dig Ventures approached us last year with a challenge, should we choose to accept it – using drone footage captured by Adam Stanford (Aerial Cam) and an earlier reconstruction by Drew Smith we were tasked with telling the story of Leiston Abbey and the Dig Ventures excavations. As usual I’d be dealing with the reconstruction side of things, adapting Drew’s original models and re-working and lighting some interior scenes to fit with the narrative. Kieran then tracked the reconstructions and geophysical survey results into Adam’s drone footage, augmenting the modern-day views with the visual interpretations to tell the story of the site…

  1. Absolutely superb. I loved the sequence as the beautifully-reconstructed refectory is stripped back to bare, ruined walls; the fizzing geophys (sorry) bubbling through the layers by the upstanding remains; and the sunlit archaeologists (it’s always like that, right?). Does a lot in little time without seeming at all laboured or overloaded.

    1. Hi Steve, Sorry somehow your lovely comment slipped under my radar – thank you very much 🙂 glad you enjoyed it!
